YMCA Fitness Instructor Shane Stanford, 33, Remembered After Fatal Toronto Drive-By Shooting and Years of Family Grief

Shane Stanford, 33, died following a drive-by shooting in Toronto, Ontario, at about 11:30 p.m. on October 7, 2020.

Stanford was driving home after locking up the Central YMCA when a bullet shattered the rear window of their Acura and struck their head near Regina and Khedive avenues in North York, close to Bathurst Street and Ranee Avenue.

The vehicle then crashed into the side of a home.

Trial footage showed an Infiniti driven by Raheem McLaughlin pursuing Stanford’s car through a residential neighbourhood, while McLaughlin maintained that an unidentified passenger fired the shot.

In May, a jury found McLaughlin guilty of causing Stanford’s death.

During sentencing at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, the Crown shared impact statements describing the family’s lasting grief and trauma.

The court also heard that McLaughlin faced three prohibition orders and had 35 previous criminal convictions involving serious conduct.

Stanford’s life and work as a YMCA fitness instructor remain central to their loved ones’ remembrance.
