Liaquat Ali Khan, Rawalpindi, Pakistan

Liaquat Ali Khan Remembered 75 Years After Pakistan’s First Prime Minister Died During a Historic Rawalpindi Gathering

Pakistan marks 75 years since Liaquat Ali Khan, the nation’s first prime minister, died on Oct. 16, 1951, after sustaining fatal injuries while addressing a Muslim League gathering at Company Bagh in Rawalpindi.

The 56-year-old leader had begun speaking at about 4 p.m. when the attack interrupted the event, and medical personnel rushed Liaquat to Combined Military Hospital, where the prime minister died.

Authorities formed a commission on Oct. 25, 1951, which heard 66 witnesses during 38 sessions and submitted its report in February 1952.

Further inquiries continued in 1954 and 1955, but investigators never conclusively established the motive or whether others participated.

Liaquat helped shape Pakistan’s early government, supported peaceful dispute resolution, and signed the Nehru-Liaquat Pact in 1950 to protect minorities in Pakistan and India.

The park later became Liaquat Bagh, preserving the memory of a national leader whose death remains one of Pakistan’s enduring historical mysteries.
