Michael Smith, 52, Dies After Five-Vehicle Fort Duquesne Bridge Crash in Pittsburgh

Michael Smith, 52, of Pittsburgh’s Sheraden neighborhood, died Wednesday after an SUV went over the Fort Duquesne Bridge and fell about 30 feet onto Reedsdale Street.

The five-vehicle crash occurred around 3 p.m. near the Route 65 ramp and Acrisure Stadium.

Smith, who drove the SUV, died at the scene after reportedly heading home from dropping off a coworker.

Danielle Jackman, 58, of Churchill, also died after emergency crews freed Jackman from a vehicle and medics transported Jackman to a hospital in critical condition.

No occupants of the other vehicles reported injuries.

Pittsburgh police and public safety crews managed the complex scene while investigators examined the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Southbound Route 65 remained closed at the ramp until PennDOT reopened it shortly before 7 p.m.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed both deaths as the community mourned two lives lost during an ordinary Wednesday afternoon.
